As a parent, thanks to online guitar resources, it is not necessary that you know how to teach beginner guitar for your child to play. Actually, you don’t even need to know anything about music!
Plus, since homeschoolers tend to have a lot of scheduling flexibility, it is often possible to work with talented teachers, musicians, or instructors who might not otherwise be available. As well, it’s possible to schedule classes more frequently vs. weekly classes, which helps speed up progress and help with music retention. And, another plus of homeschooler scheduling flexibility is that homeschoolers can sometimes attend music classes in larger blocks of time, which is often beneficial for acquiring guitar skills.
You might be surprised to know that you don’t have to spend a fortune to get a decent, quality guitar for beginners. This is also true for left-handed beginner guitars! I know I have been pleasantly surprised at the sound and quality of guitars I’ve purchased online.

You can also find online homeschool guitar lessons for nearly any age. Although, some instructors and schools are reluctant to teach children under six or seven years old. For example, I’ve heard an instructor say that guitar lessons for a 5 year old is too young. Some instructors say that age seven is generally a good age to start learning to play guitar. However, anyone can learn how to play guitar at any age.

M chose guitar because it was something he always liked (but never pursued). He likes songs from AC/DC. In fact, he likes rock music so much that when we drove to the seaside 2 years back, that’s all we heard for the long drive there and back 🤣.
When he was little, he kept saying he wants to learn to play electric guitar and I have gotten him one mini electric practice guitar. He never used it much, so I just let things slide.

I really didn’t have big expectations after just a couple of live classes and some hasty practice late in the night. But I am very impressed with the progress I’ve seen so far.
M has gone from not knowing how to hold a guitar properly to being able to play some tunes and understanding the first chords.
Why {and How} We Make Time For Music Lessons In Our Homeschool
🎸 The live lessons are short and class size is small (2-3 kids)- the classes only last 30 minutes, so it’s not overwhelming for the kids. This is perfect for busy homeschool families as well.
🎸 James, our guitar instructor, is very patient. I like that he takes time to make sure kids understand the chords to play and play them correctly before moving on. He even offered a remedial class for M because he seemed to struggle and had difficulty in keeping up with the rest of his group.
🎸 Fun songs– unlike most programs, the songs they learn are from well-known rock bands so the kids are excited to be able to play what seems like a complicated song. They learn a new song every 2 weeks.
