For beginners I like to have a method books such as Alfreds or Hal Leonards and occasionally supplement with an easy piece to hold their interest. Its important for them to have something to show as soon as possible. As the student advances, the Mickey Baker books are good for the interested jazz student. I believe practicing in small amounts of time every day and taking breaks is the most effective way. Not taking breaks leads to being counter productive. Also practicing every day as opposed to trying to cram it all in last minute. Also practice stuff that doesn't come easy to you, that is really the only way to improve. To me it isn't always how much you practice, but how focused and efficient the practice session was. You can have more effective practice session for an hr a opposed to prating 5 hrs in one day if that 1hr practice session is productive.

I usually recommend having students start no earlier then 5 years old. I believe a child is read when they show a strong interest in wanting to learn. A friend might play guitar or maybe one of their older siblings plays the instrument or a favorite band/artist inspired them to want to learn the instrument. DO NOT buy an expensive guitar or any of the beginner materials I recommend until the student shows a continued interest. Worst case they don't like it and it's not a huge loss to you as parent financially.
The common expectation is that a student will just be able to pick it up and play songs soon and some students do, but Everyone learns differently so I can't fully answer the question. What I can say is that I believe anyone can learn this instrument and it is my job as a teacher to make sure of that. I can say that within the first few months you will see results and 6 months to a year is when you start to really see results.
I chose guitar after being influenced from Marty McFly in the movie Back to the Future. The scene where he is wailing on the electric guitar just made say I want to do that!. I would bug the heck out of my parents about getting a guitar and signing me up for lessons. We would go into guitar shops and I remember just loving the look of the electric guitar is really fascinated me. Being able to plug into this amp and create this electrified sound amazed me. Bands like Nirvana, Greenday, and pearl jam also had a profound influence on my interest in wanting to learn.

Do you use specific teaching methods or books? (Ex: Alfred, Bastion, Suzuki, Hal Leonard) Why did you choose them if you did?
I like to stick to the berklee press books for the most part. I have a library of books and I like to take snippets out of those and make copies for students. I also strongly believe everything is in the recordings of the music we listen to be it jazz, country or rock and I stress the importance of listening. I overall like to have a balance of the two.

I have a bachelor of music in Jazz Performance from The Ohio State University in which I studied with guitar professor Tim Cummiskey.
I also play piano, bass and some banjo. I started playing piano in college as it was apart the curriculum that I had to learn. I love piano it is a great instrument to write music on and sometimes I wish it was my primary instrument, ha! I started playing other instruments about 3-4 years ago from being in a band called urban tropic. The band was made up of two very talented siblings that were multi instrumentalist, we all lived in a house together and I was able to learn from them, but also use their instruments that were lying around the house.
