Gretsch has announced 14 new models, including two parlour acoustics, upgrades to several Gretsch classics and new artist signature models for Nick 13, Brian Setzer and Michael Guy Chislett.
This single-cut sports a neat gloss finish over a mahogany body with a maple top. There is, of course, a Bigsby for some wobble, and notably, there are two Dynasonic single-coil pickups. These are known for their bright, vintage sound with lots of definition. The neck joint is also new, with a deeper bout on the back of the cutaway for easy access to all 24 frets, while the neck is also set lower in the body for a slimmer feel.
This new Electromatic Jet FT sticks to the 65-year old formula when it comes to the general approach. The newly-designed chambered mahogany body is loaded with two Black Top Filter’Trons, and comes with a lower set neck for easier high-fret access like its Players Edition counterpart. Other upgrades include a bound headstock, vintage-styled purfling and closed-back die-cast tuning machines.

This semi-hollow comes with a striking black-and-gold aesthetic, down to the Bigsby tailpiece and potentiometer knobs. Despite being semi-hollow, it’s got a smaller body than you might expect, and kicks out a variety of tones thanks to a combination of a soapbar P90 and a Broad’Tron humbucker in the neck and bridge respectively.
A signature model for founding ist and producer for celebrated Christian rock band Hillsong UNITED, the G6136T-MGC comes in a bright white finish that should be familiar to fans of the Gretsch White Falcon. The fully hollow body build features a highly resonant solid Sitka spruce top, vintage 1959-style trestle bracing and laminated maple back and sides, leading to, as Gretsch puts it, “that classic big-body sound with incredible projection and rich, balanced tone.” Helping that tone project are two TV Jones TV Classic Filter’Trons, finished in gold along with the rest of the ’s hardware.
This signature Falcon-style es in collaboration with Black Crowes founding member Rich Robinson. Its construction features a 3-ply maple body with solid spruce top and 1959-style trestle bracing with a spruce block under the bridge, and oversized F-holes for explosive sonic projection and maximum feedback control. The body is loaded with a TV Jones Classic humbucker in the bridge, and a Broad’Tron BT65 in the neck for a range of punchy tones on tap.

Nick 13 of rock trio Tiger Army draws musical influence from classic rock ‘n‘ roll and country as much as he does ‘70s punk, and so this signature es with a host of features that strike a balance between spiky distortion and more traditional sparkle. In terms of pickups, there are two Black Top Filter’Trons loaded into a chambered mahogany body. Like the other new Jets for 2020, there’s a lower-set neck joint for easier access to all 22 frets.
Aside from the angular bridge, this es with the notable addition of two Broad’Tron pickups. These have, according to Gretsch, enough output to push your tone into “thick, aggressive overdrive while maintaining astounding definition and note balance suitable for the most pristine clean tone.”
1930s, ‘40s and ‘50s, with a non-cutaway basswood body, X-bracing and a top-loaded walnut bridge. Sticking to the classic stylings, there are open-gear ‘50s style tuner heads, and an aged white pickguard with a stylish ‘G’ decal.

With similar construction to the G9500, this acoustic also sports a basswood body and a C-profile neck. But, as you can see, there’s the major addition of a Deltoluxe pickup resting across the soundhole for your amplification needs.
This single cut comes with a one-piece compensated wraparound tailpiece, and a much simpler electronics layout. While many of the Jet-style s have individual pickup volumes, a master tone and a master volume, this has just a master tone and volume controlling its Broad’Tron (bridge) and P90 (neck).
This semi-hollow sports a chambered spruce centre block for extra resonance, as well as a slightly smaller body and a lower-set neck for a more ergonomic playing experience. Two Black Top Broad’Trons offer punchy humbucker tones, making the most of the resonant, open body.

This Double-cut Silver Falcon sports a hollow laminated maple body loaded with High Sensitive Filter’Trons for a touch-responsive vintage sound. The also retains classic Silver Falcon features such as the pearloid thumbnail inlays, an anchored Adjusto-Matic bridge, and a string-through Bigsby tailpiece.
The first of two new Brian Setzer Signatures for 2020, this features a maple neck, a flame maple body and an ebony fretboard. Modern appointments include a compound 9.5-12-inch radius across the fretboard, as well as hotter output from Setzer’s signature set of TV Jones pickups. The volume controls for each pickup also sport dice knobs, and instead of a tone control, there’s a three-way tone selector switch.

The second new Brian Setzer signature sports a somewhat more stripped-back approach, with only a three-position pickup toggle switch and master volume control with treble bleed circuit to control the two TV Jones Brian Setzer signature Filter’Trons. Other construction points include a laminated maple body and vintage V-profiled maple neck.Gretsch make some of the best-looking, most distinctive guitars in the world. Nothing looks like a Gretsch, nothing feels like a Gretsch and nothing sounds like a Gretsch. They also offer some of the widest price points too, covering the affordable, mid-priced and top end areas of the market. Each one is beautiful, so when you see them all up on their wall hangers in a store, it can seem quite difficult to account for the differences in price, especially when they superficially look quite similar.

Put simply, it’s the same as comparing a Squier Strat or Tele to a Fender Mexican Player, an American Professional and a Custom Shop instrument, more or less. They do share basic looks but, as we know with Fender, there are a great number of subtle nuances and differences between each price point that add up to significantly change the sound, feel and performance.
Today, we figured we’d delve a little deeper into the three main Gretsch electric guitar ranges, and perhaps make those differences a little more distinct.
As mentioned, there are three main branches to the Gretsch electric guitar tree, referred to as Collections by Gretsch. Starting from the top, there is the Professional Collection, the Electromatic and the Streamliner Collections. In addition, Gretsch also produce two Acoustic ranges- Roots (ukuleles, resonators and such) and Acoustic - but we’ll stick to the electric guitar ranges today since those are the areas that perhaps create a little confusion. There is also a Custom Shop, which we’ll mention briefly, too.

Gretsch as a brand has been around for well over a century, beginning in 1883 in Brooklyn, New York City. Friedrich, or Fritz, Gretsch started the brand with the great tagline ‘One block from the Ferry’, and sold banjos, tambourines and drums to begin with. Trivia: it was in fact a Gretsch drum kit, named the Broadkaster, that caused the company to object to Fender’s initial Telecaster title of Broadcaster!
Though still highly regarded for their drums, it’s probably fair to say that they are mostly celebrated for their supremely attractive semi acoustics. Like most classic electric guitars from the golden era of the late 40s to late 60s, Gretsch base much of their current catalogue on those timeless designs. Today’s blog isn’t so much about recounting these famous designs, but the fact remains that their influence is directly there in every newly made Gretsch guitar. First, let’s begin with Gretsch’s Professional line of guitars.
The Gretsch Professional Collection is the company’s top-end, flagship line of guitars and basses. Here is where you will find such iconic instruments as the White Falcon, the Country Gentleman and the Duo Jet.

Gretsch Pro Collection guitars are all made in Japan to very exacting standards. The workmanship and finishing is hugely impressive, as befitting such a historical brand. As with the other ranges we’ll look at today, Gretsch guitars in the Pro Collection are available as fully hollow guitars (no solid centre block and thus arguably the most ‘Gretsch’ in terms of their sound), semi hollow guitars with centre blocks to reduce feedback issues, and solid body guitars like the Duo Jet.
Japan has long since held a reputation for delivering some of the best-made musical instruments on the planet. This is true of Gretsch’s Professional Collection guitars. These are the high-end choices for those players who want the very best. It’s an interesting point to note that, although these Japanese Gretsches are made in a factory, there are far fewer of them made every year than the number of guitars made by the Fender Custom Shop, for example. These are quite exclusive instruments indeed!
The Professional Collection actually subdivides a little further into two more sections: the Player Edition and Vintage Select. The Player Editions look to classic designs but allow for slightly more user-friendly, modern specs and appointments in order to serve working professionals.
